The American war of Secession (Civil War) in the HDGM

This section is the core of the HDGM. It represents the 5th Virginia Infantry in the period between 1860 and 1865. The 5th Virginia came from the Shenandoah Valley where the Germans made up a very high proportion of the population.

Our reenactments take place according to the yearly anniversaries of the events of the conflict, that is, in 2000 we deal with 1865. In 2001 we begin again with 1861. This requires of the reenactors that they acquire at least two uniforms in order to be able to be correctly dressed in the respective years..

New members are given a brochure about the regiment history and the historical literature and, above all, indicates sources for the best equipment.

Some members also posses a Union uniform so that we can compensate for imbalances in the forces according to the particular event.

Along with the "fighting troops", the roster of this section of the HDGM is supplemented with authentic civilians such as suttlers and ladies who are integrated into the reenactment in accordance with the period to be represented.
